The Northern portion of the Great Lake State is one of the greatest hunting experiences in North America. More than 90% of the Upper Peninsula is forested and there are 3.9 million acres of state forest land and 2.7 million acres of national forest. Michigan has 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, and you are never more than 6 miles from a lake or stream. Beautiful scenery and a wide variety of game make Northern Michigan a hunter’s paradise.

Hunters in Northern Michigan have a wide variety of game, both small and large, to choose from. Big game includes white-tailed deer, black bear and elk. Pheasant, quail and woodcock are also available for bird hunters. Waterfowl like ducks, mergansers, moorhens, rails and Canadian geese are hunted on many Northern Michigan lakes. Small game hunters have their choice of coyote, rabbits, squirrels and woodchucks. Whatever game you prefer to hunt, you can most likely find it in Northern Michigan.

The first day of rifle deer hunting season in Northern Michigan is practically a state holiday. Many schools close and the woods are full of hunters sporting their distinctive blaze orange hunting gear. Every local newscast features a “Big Buck” report and people trade venison recipes like baseball cards. In Northern Michigan, deer hunting isn’t just an activity people do for fun, its part of the local culture.  Even if you don’t hunt yourself, you’re sure to know at least one person who does.
